Eurovision 2027 to be held in either Burgas or Sofia

Bulgaria's public broadcaster has today (13th July) announced that the next edition of the Eurovision Song Contest will be held in either Burgas or Sofia. Both cities met the EBU requirements for potential host cities.

The two other bidding cities, Plovdiv and Varna, have been eliminated from the race as they didn't meet EBU standards.

Sofia hosted the Junior Eurovision in 2015, while Burgas has no such experience to speak of. Plovdiv was European Capital of Culture in 2019 and Varna is a major port city and cultural hub.

Both cities will be further assessed to meet EBU criteria and the final choice will be announced at the end of this month.

Director General of BNT, Milena Milotinova, is keen to emphasise that the city selection procedure is based purely on meeting EBU standards: "We would like to emphasise that this decision is based solely on the assessment of the pre-established technical and infrastructure criteria, which were applied equally to all candidates. It does not call into question the undeniable strengths of your cities or their well-established traditions in music, culture, and international festivals. This also creates opportunities for their participation in the programme of accompanying events."
